Mexico Prayer
Greco Christian Missionary News

Greetings Amigos!

One of my favorite quotes comes from The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien and reads like this:

"The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began,
Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow if I can.
Pursuing it with weary feet, until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet, and wither then? I cannot say."

Once again, or "road" has joined some "larger way", and we are both honored and humbled by the change.

Several weeks ago, our Mexico Area Directors, Butch and Pam Frey, announced their resignation effective the coming year. A week later, we attended our annual Mexico Area Missionary Retreat where the new Area Directors were to be announced. We attended with the normal curiosity, but we were quite surprised by the events that transpired.

During the course of the retreat, we were asked by the Latin America/Caribbean Regional Directors, Dick and Cynthia Nicholson, if we would be willing to assume this responsibility. This was not anything to which we aspired nor did we see it coming, but after some intense prayer, we sensed God's direction and accepted the post - albeit with quite a bit of "fear and trembling". This transition will take place over the course of the next year using a mentoring format, with full responsibilities to be realized when that process is completed. Needless to say, we need your prayers more than ever in order to be able to fulfill this new responsibility.

Briefly, the responsibilities of Area Director fall into 4 specific categories: Missionary Care, Strategic Vision, Administrative Oversight, and Relational Networking (between the Mexican National Church and the U.S. Assemblies of God). This next year will be one of considerable learning and study to get up to speed!

We also need to inform you - our partners in prayer and support - that due to this change, our itineration cycle will be greatly altered. Instead of the traditional one year of itineration every four years, we will now be returning for brief itineration several times during the year so that we will not be out of the country so long. Initially, this means that we will be in the U.S. for a few months early in 2009 to jump start this process. We will also have to increase our current level of monthly support to assist with the new ministry responsibilities. The travel demands that are part of this responsibility are of special concern. We have approximately 40 missionary families here in Mexico, and we want to be sure that we can attend to their needs as best as possible. Please pray with us as we endeavor to raise an additional $1000 in monthly support for this purpose.

We are greatly indebted to Butch and Pam, both for their able leadership over the past 10 years and for their genuine friendship. We are also grateful to the missionary fellowship here in Mexico for their affirmation and encouragement, and to the Nicholsons, our Regional directors, for their confidence. It is a great honor to follow Butch and Pam in this role. We covet your prayers and promise to do all we can to serve our Lord, our Missionary Body, the Mexican National Church, and our Supporting churches as best we can.

Matthew 22:34-40 "Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.'"
