Humanitarian Aid
Bread Distribution
Crossroads has already distributed 11,406 loaves of bread to communities in Stanger, Chatsworth, Phoenix, Madoni Tree, Trenance Manor and Sandpit. We are presently picking up bread on two days a week i.e. Mondays and Wednesdays. We are negotiating to add another pick up day with the bread company. We have added 3 more recipient organizations to our distribution list. Efforts with these receiving organizations concerning increasing their spiritual impact with these communities are being put in place.
Madoni Tree Informal Settlement
The beginning of 2009 has been impactful at Madoni Tree. Monthly hamper distribution has now increased to 50 hampers per month. Our initiative is now focusing on dealing with spiritual, social and behavioral transformation. Our introduction of Tsidiso Sentani our new volunteer is making a huge difference. Tsidiso is and has been HIV positive for the past 9 years. She contracted the disease while she was living as a street child.
She is investing 4 days of her week interacting with the locals with the intention of building relationships. Her personal testimony is proving to be an eye opener for many. She has counseled 25 people in the last 2 weeks, of which 17 revealed their status of being HIV positive. Their days begin with prayer and are full with personal counseling.
We have now opened our first HIV support group called “Sinethemba” – “We have hope” at Oakford Clinic. The support group has 10 ladies attending regularly. At these sessions participants are given assistance and information as to, how to cope with the disease. They are also given insight into how nutrition helps in the fight against HIV/AIDS. All these ladies have been enrolled on the ARV regiment with the Oakford Clinic Department of Health. The Crossroads HIV/AIDS support group at Madoni tree is the first such group in the area. Due to the success of our program the Dept of Health has requested a meeting with us concerning our work in the area. Attempts are being made to encourage people in the area to have themselves tested for the virus.
To cater for the spiritual needs of the people, we are also erecting the church building at Madoni Tree. The building is due to be completed by the end of March 2009. The church presently has 60 people that attend the services on a Sunday morning. We are presently looking to start a weekly bible study for the people at Madoni Tree.
Our Micro development projects are also proving to be useful to the livelihood of the people of Madoni Tree. Most of the vegetables that are planted are sold at the local market. The rest are used by the families themselves in the nutrition program. People are using the money they make from the sale of vegetables to eke out a living for themselves and their families.
Sandpit Informal Settlement
Beatrice Cele’s son is enrolled at our Redcliffe Alpha Care centre. At the enrollment interview Beatrice told us of the great need at Sandpit Squatter Settlement in Redcliffe Verulam. Beatrice and 4 other ladies are Home-based Care Workers in the community. Beatrice and her colleagues work together in taking care of orphans, HIV/Aids sufferers and the frail that cannot take care of themselves. Beatrice has supplied us with a list of the orphans and vulnerable children in the community. We also have a list of Adults that are HIV positive and have little or no food on a day to day basis. Crossroads has begun feeding 100 children a meal on Tuesday afternoon. I am working on raising more money and food for this community.
Feeding At Schools
Blackburn and Zenzeleni Primary School
Blackburn Primary, Zenzeleni Primary and Trenance Park are recipients of our Breakfast Feeding Programme. We are presently providing 12400 breakfast meals to 620 learners per month. Our Crossroads Student Ministry teams are working on curriculum to introduce in all the primary schools we are feeding at. Deloittes is providing the funding for this project.
Nonhlevu Secondary School
The project has resumed in 2009 and Crossroads is providing 350 grade 8 learners with sandwiches every Thursday. The project is run with the Saints Church Stanger and Crossroads. Boxer Superstores is providing the funding for this project. Crossroads is also speaking to Project Build, an organization which helps with erecting new classrooms, to help with the shortage of space in the schools. Our Schools ministry team is presently working on curriculum to be able to present to students in this school as well.
Medical Clinic
Medical in Port Shepstone
The 20 – 22nd February Crossroads held its first medical clinic in 2009. The clinic was held in Palmview, Marburg – Port Shepstone. Five churches/ organizations namely Project Positive Ray, Salem Evangelical Church, Zion Tabernacle, Shiloh Evangelical Church and Radiant Life Ministries had joined Crossroads in this project. There was ample supply of willing volunteers from the churches as well as medical personnel. We saw 735 patients on these 3 days. Of the people seen 68 prayed the sinner’s prayer and 117 wanted to know more about Christ. Follow-up is being done and we will receive feedback concerning the impact the medical crusade had on the people of Port Shepstone.
The next two medical clinics will be on the 3rd to 5th April 2009 with New Beginnings Family Church and on the 15th – 17th May with Christian Missions Centre.
Alpha Care Centres
The Centre’s opened their doors on the 2nd February 2009. Each Centre has a quota of 25 children. We are working on getting the children fitted with uniforms. Again this year we have children that come from poor and needy homes and dysfunctional families. Our 2008 graduates have been openly accepted into Primary Schools. Our kids are outperforming the rest of the kids according to the teachers of their classes. They have commended us on the splendid job that we are doing and also mentioned that the program is preparing the kids for Grade R.
Student Ministries
Peer Education Program
The launching of Crossroads Student Ministry has been timeous, especially with the negative publicity surrounding most of our schools were violence has reared its ugly head. Our peer to peer education has opened an avenue were pupils, across the spectrum of racial, cultural and social barriers, are revealing their dire need for intervention on the parts of caring adults. We are inundated by requests from school managers for assistance in their schools. The peer education programme is in full swing at the following schools; Palmview, Woodview and Foresthaven Secondary Schools. These schools are located in Phoenix, which we recently discovered has a huge drug and alcohol problem. This was confirmed at a meeting between one of the key stakeholders i.e. The Phoenix Police Station Commander and Crossroads. We have 117 learners that are directly under the tutorage of our Peer Facilitators.
The principals and staff of the schools have welcomed us with open arms and have asked Crossroads to help with the social issues the respective schools are dealing with. We have already had the privilege of counseling 3 students and their families in the privacy of our offices. God is granting us opportunities that are allowing us to meet the objectives of being catalyst for change in the lives of young people. We also are preparing counseling rooms that the schools have allocated to us.
Mahendra has been meeting with ministers and Christian lay workers who have committed to help share the responsibility of helping us counsel students and their parents. Preparations are underway for our first student ministry camp that’s due to take place in June 2009.
Crossroads is forging close relationships with other key role players i.e. Phoenix Police Station, local clinics and other NGO’s that are working with Student and youth issues. We had the privilege of being invited to a major event on Drug Awareness on the 5th March 2009 in the Phoenix area. This meeting was arranged by the office of Minister of Community Safety and Liaison MEC The Honorable Bheki Cele.
Learners from different communities and different racial groups in Durban were invited to this address. This opportunity allowed us to expose the Crossroads Student Ministry.
Teacher Training
On the 7th February 2009, Lynette Singh hosted a Teacher Training Session for Sunday school teachers. Representatives from Truth, Love and Mercy Ministries and New Beginnings Family Church received training on the Kids Around the World curriculum. Lynette is contracting with different churches to have other teacher training programs soon. Churches are receiving this curriculum very positively.
